Strategies & method.

After having heard -unexpectedly- the complaint of a group of students for the way I evaluate the subject*, I have made a decision. I've decided to change my methodology. These pupils of AE -Atención Educativa- say they've got the impression they were evaluated in a very subjective manner. Their personal view basically stands out the fact that they think I am being unfair. They think they deserve a higher mark on the subject. I remind them that the evaluation of the subject is not relevant for the student record. I insist on reminding them AE is an easy subject of no academic importance according to LOMLOE (Spanish education law, 2023/24).


This happens after they see their last task -easy test on two topics where they must express briefly about a piece of news and make some insight on a cartoon. Obviously the responses to these items are to be free, open, creative. They complain about their marks. They don't like them. I openly ask what do they demand. One of them proposes to get a mark taking into account their effort & their behavior. Then, I respond that the marking she proposes would be the darkest way of evaluation in school.

I will teach them ethics as well. I will show them texts, videos, stories and cartoons. I will be happy to listen their s u b j e c t i v e views. 

However, the tasks will be from now on mostly objective and not open. 


To conclude, I will teach ethics, they will argue and express their views orally. Then, they will be marked accurately in black and white.**

extract from HOJA DEL ALUMNO, Business English 1 

'El alumno que falte a dos o más pruebas por cualquier motivo justificado o sin justificar pasará automáticamente a ser evaluado según la opción B. Solo realizará un examen (80%). Asimismo, sumará asistencia y participación en clase (10%) y, o bien minitest 375 o test (hasta un total de 10%). En ningún caso podrá contar más de 100 puntos por trimestre.

Los criterios de evaluación se distribuyen cada trimestre de la manera siguiente:  

a/cuaderno de clase (5 puntos). Son 2 recogidas de cuaderno en clase para revisar y puntuar tareas -sin aviso previo-, lo que supone un total de 10 puntos. 

b/minitest 375 (5 puntos). Se trata de 2 minitest, por lo tanto sumaría, en el mejor de los casos, 10 puntos.  

c/test sorpresa: teoría y práctica (10 puntos). Estos test son opcionales. 

d/asistencia a clase [participación activa, es decir, comportamiento correcto en el aula, estar atento a la explicación del profesor y tomar notas] (6 puntos). Los puntos de asistencia se conceden por defecto a cualquier alumno presente en el aula siempre y cuando el alumno sea puntual y mantenga una actitud correcta; es decir, el alumno participa, presta atención y toma nota. No cumplir una de estas condiciones puede suponer la retirada de estos puntos de asistencia.  

e/intervenciones en clase -orales o escritas- (4 puntos).

La asistencia a clase y la realización de ejercicios escritos es obligatoria.

f/examen de evaluación (70 / 80 puntos): dictado, traducción, listening, reading comprehension, etcétera.

Un trimestre se evalúa de 0 a 100 puntos.

El profesor podrá requerir la entrega de tareas para casa con fecha determinada y otro tipo de trabajos o controles de modo individual o colectivo. La no realización de estos trabajos o su baja calificación afectará al resultado de la evaluación en curso de forma negativa.'
