How do I read a book?

Nabil Al Hussain

-@quora-

May 1

'Reading has a number of benefits including improving your memory and vocabulary, helping you learn new things, and improving focus and concentration. There are a number of tricks to help you read more and develop a daily reading habit.

Some of the tricks I use to read and make the process enjoyable are:

1. Create a reading list

I would definitely advise you to create a reading list. Books you would like to read, books you've already read and subjects you would like to read about.

I use Samsung Notes to keep track of my readings. It makes me more determined and focused and as mentioned in James Clear “Atomic Habits". “You must track your progress.”

2. Schedule a time for reading

To make sure that you will read every day, you need to schedule reading into your day.

For example, I like to read just when I wake up in the morning which sets me with a focused mind to aid me through my day.

3. Find a good place to read

As mentioned in “Atomic Habits",

Motivation is overrated; Environment often matters more

You have to be comfortable to enjoy reading. Try reading on a sofa, on your bed, or wherever you feel comfortable. You may like to read in a library. Just make sure you're comfortable in your reading sessions.

4. Eliminate distractions

I tend to keep my phone on silent mode while reading to avoid unnecessary distractions and stay immersed and focused on the book I'm reading. This makes sure to keep you in your flow state and prevents consistently checking your phone which leads to disturbing your flow of mind.

5. Join book clubs

You may like reading with other people, possibly your partner or your best friend. Reading in a group will keep you motivated and make your readings much more enjoyable.

7. Read actively

I like to keep a book journal next to me while I'm reading so I can take notes (especially if the book is self-help). Highlight lines you find interesting, ask questions, and keep yourself engaged with the subject. This will make sure that upon finishing the book. You could have some keynotes to review.

6. Know when to quit

Not enjoying the book. It's fine. You don't have to force yourself into completing it. In fact, if you do that, reading will feel more like a burden and your subconscious mind will try to avoid it and link pain to it. Only read books that you enjoy and are satisfied with.

As for me, I read the first two chapters, if I don't feel like enjoying it, I lay it down. Life is too short to waste it on books you don't enjoy. The books could even be a Bestseller, you don't have to force yourself through it.

These are some of the tricks I use to make my readings more enjoyable and rewarding. I hope they make yours too.'
