Reading (@quora)

At age 32, how do I develop the habit of reading and speaking good English?

Emad Adridar

Hi, first of all I assume that you are learning English.

I'm an English learner as you, and I can give you some tips that helped me to develop the habit of reading.

I'm a college student, and every day I have to take the train to go to the university. During this time I have nothing to do, so I decided to download apps to read some articles or news. Moreover, I frequently read answers on Quora.

My advice would be to organise your time and read whenever you can, no matter if it’s a short article or a large book. To be hooked on reading, I suggest you to read something that you like, otherwise you get bored and leave it for another day. Another important fact is that you should find books adapted to your English level, to understand almost everything you're reading . To improve your vocabulary you can read different books, articles etc.

To develop the habit of reading you need to start reading, at the beginning it may be hard or some days you will forget, but the most important thing is whenever you have time, try to read. The key to develop a habit is to repeat an action again and again, is like when you brush your teeth before going to bed, do you ever thought about brushing your teeth? I'm sure that you do this simple action without noticing it. The same with reading, keep repeating until you take a book without thinking about the action.

This happened to me, when I get on the train, I open instinctively quora or other apps to read. That’s because I have been doing this action during months and now I don't need to remind myself to read, I do it naturally.

You also want to know about speaking.

When we born, we learn to speak our mother tongue doing one fundamental action: Listening.

The same way you can learn to speak good English, first listening and then speaking.

My advice would be to watch content in English, listening how English native speakers, talk and pronounce the words. This is going to help you to acquire more vocabulary and learn the way they use the good English.

Then the second step is to speak. To become fluent speaker of good English, you need to practice. In fact, you need to speak as much as you can and try to use all the words, vocabulary, expressions that you're listening. If you are constantly using these words, you will remember them easily next time you need them. Otherwise, if you don't practice speaking and you just listen, you will understand everything, but you won't be able to remember the words when you speak.

I hope my answer is useful to you.

P.S. I would be very happy if someone can check my answer and correct my mistakes. Thank you!
